Fishing Report

As we approach the unofficial end of the 2009 blackfish, striped bass and bluefish season we are starting to see the blackfish move into deeper water anywhere from 40-60 feet east of Rye and as far east as Norwalk. These fish are moving aggressively as the water temperatures drop to the lower 50 degrees. Fish from 3-5 pounds are being caught on green crabs, Asian crabs and fresh clams out of the shell.

On the bluefish and striped bass front the fresh bunker have totally disappeared into the deeps of the ocean for the winter but they are still catching striped bass by the Throgs Neck Bridge and Stepping Stone Lighthouse on Jack's famous sand worms and blood worms. For those who want to fish with the meat the store is carrying fresh frozen bunker and mackeral and also fresh clams out of the shell. These fish are being caught in depths of 20-60 feet of water depending on the area.

Fishing Report

As we enter the month of November the black fish, the bluefish and the striped bass fishing will continue to improve until it slows down towards the end of the month.

As of today November 2nd the black fishing is definitely at its best fish are being caught up to 10 and one half pounds in 20-50 feet of water. The water temperature now is 55 degrees and with a cool week ahead of us the temperature will continue to drop and this will cause the black fish to move into deeper water until they are 80-100 feet of water. Right now the best bait is green crabs, fiddler crabs and Asian crabs. The best areas are Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hens and Chicken, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye and all the way up the coast of Connecticut as far east as Norwalk. This has definitely been some of the best black fishing in a lot of years due to the overabundance of east winds. So make sure to get out and take advantage of this great fishing because time is limited!

On the bluefish and striped bass front they are catching fish in the middle of Long Island Sound behind Execution Lighthouse in 60ft of water with fresh bunker, mackeral, and Jack's Jumbo sand and blood worms. These fish are moving through the sound heading towards the ocean as the water temperature drops. This bite should last at least another couple of weeks until the water temperature goes below 50 degrees. The same holds true for the black fish.

We will be renting boats for at least a few more weeks, weather permitting 6am-4pm. The party boats will continue to sail until at least the end of November with some boats sailing into December for black fish.

Watch for our huge "End Of Year Holiday Sale" 10-30% off everything in stock from Thanksgiving thru December 20th!

Our November store hours are 5am to 6pm 7 days a week.

Get out while you can as this fishing season comes to an end.

Fishing Report

As we get deeper into the fall the water temperature continues to drop there are readings of 55 and 57 degree water temperatures which makes for a good bite especially for the blues, the bass and the blackfish.

On the blackfish front reports of fish to 10 and one half pounds which were weighed in here at Jack's have been caught in water depths from 10-50ft of water. This is a large span of water depth most are concentrating in depths of 10-30ft. Best bait has been fiddler crabs, green crabs, fresh clams and Asian crabs. Best areas are Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hens and Chickens, Rye, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and anywhere east along the Connecticut shorelines as far east as Norwalk. Looking for structure, rocky bottom, or quick drop offs are best.

Bluefish and striped bass have also been caught inside all the harbors, Hempstead, Manhassett, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and further east all on Jack's famous fresh bunker.

As we get closer to the end of October and into November the water temperatures will continue to drop which will cause the bite to get faster and more aggressive on all fronts for bluefish, blackfish and striped bass.

Take advantage of every nice fishing day.

Jack's boat rentals will be in the water until the middle of November and the party boats will be sailing into December.

Fishing Report

As we approach the end of September with Oct. 1st only 3 days away all of the fishing efforts will go towards blackfish, bluefish, and fall striped bass. The porgy season is officially closed for all private boaters and anglers but still remains open for the party boat and charter boat fishing until Oct. 15th.

The blackfish season opens Oct. 1st, the store is fully stocked with all crabs and clams, the best spots for these blackfish will be Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hens and Chicken, and Davis Island. Depth of water between 15-25ft of water is best for these fish but as the water cools off they will move deeper but that will not be until the end of October into November.

On the bluefish front they are catching bluefish between 12 and 15 pounds from the Throgs Neck Bridge to The Stepping Stone Lighthouse to the mouth of Manhassett and Hempstead Harbor. Best bait is Jack's famous fresh bunker and mackeral.

They are still catching snappers which are now on the larger side these fish are biting spearing and they are being caught all around the City Island, New Rochelle and Bronx area around the docks and beaches. Striped bass continue to feed on the live squid in Long Island Sound and to the East on fresh bunker. These fish will continue to move in as the water temperature drops and they will become larger.

As of Oct. 1, 2009 everyone will need a salt water license! You will be able to purchase these licenses at the same locations as you purchase your fresh water and hunting licenses. For further info log on to the Department of Environmental Conservation website www.dec.ny.gov

The next 60 days should be some of the best fishing as long as we get the weather because the fish school up and feed and get ready to head out of town for the winter. So make sure you get out every opportunity you can without hesitation!

Fall Fishing Report

Today Sept. 21, 2009 is the final day of summer and as the summer season ends the water temperature and the fishing is at its best. Saturday Sept. 26th will be the final day for porgy fishing on private boats, rental boats and also from the shore. After Sat. you must get on a party boat or a charter boat to be able to fish for porgies until Oct. 15th with a bag limit of 45 fish per person at least 11 inches. This past weekend porgy fishing was excellent with fish to 3 pounds being caught in 25-35ft of water in all the local areas such as Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye, Execution Lighthouse, Prospect and Sands Point. Best bait Jack's jumbo sandworms and jumbo bloodworms as well as Jack's famous fresh clams in and out of the shell. Also remember to use plenty of chum so you can attract and keep the fish around the boat, chumming is a must!

On the bluefish and striped bass fronts there has been 14-16 pound bluefish being caught by the Throgs Neck, Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Ft. Tonten, and also by Maritine College. These fish are in between 20-40ft of water with Jack's famous fresh bunker being your best bet. They are also eating mackeral and live snapper. The striped bass have been caught on Jack's jumbo sands, Jack's famous fresh bunker(preferably the head) and Jack's fresh clams. There are some live squid in the sound so some of these big stripers are eating the live squid. Early morning or late evening is the best bet for these striped bass which are now starting to come back into the Long Island Sound. I can not emphasize enough that the next 60 days of fishing is best here in the Western Long Island Sound. So please make sure to get out and enjoy every nice from now till then.

A small note: blackfish season will open Thursday Oct. 1st and Jack's will be carrying a full line of crabs and clams including green crabs, fiddler crabs, Asian crabs, and white crabs.

Fishing Report

Today on Sept. 10th 2009 all the boats private, rental and party boats were all unable to get out due to the North East winds blowing 20-30mph but fear not Sat., Sun., and all next week look to be beautiful weather so everybody will be able to get out. The North East winds have blown in the porgies and bluefish right here in the local areas around Hart's Island, Execution Lighthouse, Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Davis Island, The CBS tower, Throgs Neck Bridge, Stepping Stone Lighthouse and Little Neck Bay.

On the porgy front there is no problem catching your limit on your private boats or the rental boats at 10 fish per person 10 and a half inches or on the party boats 45 fish 11in per person. Best bait is Jack's jumbo sandworms, jumbo blood worms, fresh clams and frozen squid. The depth of water is 15-20ft. in all the local areas. On the bluefish front fish from 8-14 pounds are being caught behind Execution Lighthouse, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye and also in Hempstead Harbor and Manhassett Harbor. Best bait is Jack's fresh bunker.

Striped bass fishing has also come back some with guys along the shoreline and in shallow water catching keeper size bass from 28-34 inches caught all on Jack's jumbo sandworms, fresh bunker or fresh clams. The striper fishing will continue to get better for the fall run as the water temperature begins to drop.

The porgy fishing is at its peek right now and will continue to do well until the closing day for private boats, rental boats and for shore fishermen until Sept. 26th. You will be able to fish on Sept. 26th after this date you will need to get on a party boat and will be able to keep the 45 fish 11in limit until Oct. 15th.

Oct. 1st will be the opening day for blackfish and the store will be stocked with the different variety of crabs, fiddler, green, Asian etc.

As we get closer to the end of the summer the cooler temperatures will drop the water temperatures and in turn the fall fishing will become red hot! So make sure to take advantage of this upcoming fantastic fall fishing season these upcoming months are known for being the best of the year.

Fishing Report

This past week with the threatening storm of Hurricane Bill many people decided to stay home or off the water but those who didn't found that there is plenty of bluefish and porgies in the Long Island Sound. On the porgy front fish to 3 pounds continue to be caught in all the areas from New Rochelle to Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye and across the sound from The Execution Lighthouse to Prospect Point, Sands Point, Matinicock and Bayville. These fish are being caught in 15-20ft of water with guys achoring up and using plenty of chum to keep the porgies around the boat. The best bait are Jack's jumbo sandworms, bloodworms and fresh skimmer clams occassionally some of these big porgies will also eat spearing. The porgy season will remain open for the private and rental boats until Sept. 26th. A quick note from Sept. 1st to Oct. 15th all party boat and charter boats will be allowed 45 fish at 11 inches. So make sure to get out and take advantage of what is left of this great porgy fishing season!

On the bluefish front this is the final week to sign up for the WICC bluefish contest, Friday Aug. 28th at 8pm is the deadline to sign up. It costs $37 to sign up, receive a free T-shirt and a chance to win first prize $25,000 second prize $10,000, third prize $5,000 and plenty of other prizes after that. This year they also tagged a $50,000 fish which makes the contest alot more exciting! The bluefish have been caught at Prospect Point, Sands Point, behind Execution Lighthouse which is in the middle of the Long Island Sound, and also on the Connecticut side by Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Rye. These fish are being caught in 30-40ft of water with Jack's fresh bunker cut in chunks and fished on the bottom. The schools of bunker seem to have moved way to the East so do not try to look for schools of bunker just drop Jack's fresh bunker to the bottom to catch the blues. These fish are weighing in at 10-15 pounds so we stand a very good chance of having large fish caught for the Big Bluefish Contest this weekend!

So come on down to Jack's real soon to enjoy the last of your summertime fishing fun!

Fishing Report

As we approach the unofficial end of the summer 2009 season today Aug. 17th is the final day for fluke fishing. We had a great run this past week with fish to 9 pounds being weighed in at the shop which were all caught on spearing, squid, sand eels and fresh bunker filets but despair not because even though the fluke fishing is closing the bluefish, the striped bass and the porgy fishing has picked up a notch!

This past week all of the local boats, rental boats, private boats and party boats caught great numbers of bluefish, porgies and a few stripers.

The bluefish are being caught from the Throgs Neck Bridge to Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Mannhassett Bay, Hempstead Harbor, Execution Lighthouse and around the backside of Hart's Island. These fish are being caught on fresh bunker off the bottom and around the schools of bunker.

Striped bass will occassionally bite the line if you are out between 5am and 9am early in the morning. Best bait is of course Jack's fresh bunker and these fish are also on the bottom.

On the porgy front there are people catching their limits with fish to 3 pounds all in the local areas around Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Davis Island, Execution Lighthouse, Sands Point and Prospect Point. These are agressive and usually found in 15-20ft of water. Best bait is Jack's jumbo sandworms, juicy bloodworms, fresh clams and squid.

The porgy season will continue to be open until Sept. 26th for all private ,offshore and rental boats. We still have at least 5 more weeks of good porgy fishing so make sure to get out and take advantage of every nice day. For the party boats starting Sept. 1st their porgy season will increase with a 45 fish bag limit at 11 inches until Oct. 15th so again make sure to get out and enjoy the final few months of this red hot porgy fishing.

For those bluefish enthusiasts The WICC Bluefish Contest with a 1st place prize of $25,000, $10,000 second place, $5,000 third place and many other large money prizes will start Friday night at midnight Aug. 28th. You have until Friday Aug. 28th at 8pm to sign up, $37 is the entry fee and you will get a tee shirt and a chance to win some big money! NOTE I encourage all those bluefishermen to get involved because the bluefishing has been spectacular with large bluefish being caught. It doesn't hurt to take a chance so we will see you soon here at Jack's Bait and Tackle on City Island in The Bronx NY!

PS along with all of the fresh baits needed for these fish CHUMMING IS A MUST, clam chum for the porgies and bunker chum for the bass and blues.

Fishing Report

This first week of August has proven to be a great week for bluefish, striped bass, fluke and porgies.

On the bluefish front they have returned with a vengeance, fish to 10 pounds are being caught at the Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Throgs Neck Bridge, Orchard Beach, Hart's Island, Manhassett Bay, and Half Moon Beach. These fish are here eating the schools of bunker. To catch big blues you need to use fresh bunker and mackeral which works best by putting the bait on the hook to the bottom. There are a few striped bass mixed in with the bluefish in the 25-30 pound class and hopefully this run of bass and blues will hang around for the next 3 months eating at the bunker every day.

On the porgy front they are catching large porgies at Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, The CBS Tower, New Rochelle, Larchmont and Mamaroneck. These porgies are in 15-25 feet of water and the best bait to use is sand worms, bloodworms, fresh clams and squid. And remember you much use plenty of chum to keep these porgies around your boat. Chumming is a must!

Meanwhile on the fluke front the season will be closed 2 weeks from today on Aug.17th. For the die hard fluke fishermen they are now starting to catch fish over 21 inches. These fish are being caught off all the points, bridges, barges in the Western Long Island Sound in 20-30 feet of water with spearing, sand eels and squid combos as the best bait. Remember to catch fluke you need to drift and cover a lot of bottom until you find them and then drift over that same spot again and again and again.

There is still plenty of good fishing left for the 2009 season so I suggest to all to take advantage of every nice day and get it done. Good Luck!

Fishing Report

These past two weeks have shown that the porgy fishing is at its very best. Locally fish from 1-3 pounds are being caught with catching your limit not a problem. These fish are being caught at Huckleberry Island, the CBS tower, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Rye, behind Execution Lighthouse, Prospect Point and Sands Point. They are being caught in 15-25 feet of water with Jack's jumbo sand worms, fresh clams, clam chum and bloodworms, using plenty of chum to keep the fish around the boat is a must! Shop regulars Freddie Fragano and his two sons Steve and Chris limited out on big porgies in 20-25 feet of water by Huckleberry Island using Jack's jumbo sandworms and clam chum.

On the fluke front there are some keepers being caught off all the points, Hewlett Point, Barkers Point, Matinicock, Prospects, Sands, the barges and the bridges, and any structure in the Long Island Sound. Best bait is spearing, sand eels, squid, large smelts, and filet of Jack's fresh bunker. These fish are also being caught in 15-30 feet of water.

On the bass and bluefish front; the blues seem to show up every morning around Orchard Beach, Harts Island and around the coves. There are still large bass being caught up to 40 pounds. Shop regular Guy Lomardo caught a 40 pounder on fresh bunker which he caught locally in the early morning hours. The best bait for these fish are Jack's fresh bunker, mackeral, and also plenty of bunker chum to keep the fish around your boat.

Jocelyn Joseph had a 25 pound striper on the Island Current over the weekend. Handsome Hank also had a 25 pound striped bass over the weekend which he caught late at night.. Both caught using Jack's fresh bunker!

Again I cannot emphasize enough that the season is moving along quickly so everyone needs to get out and take advantage of every nice day in order to catch some of these porgies, stripers, blues and fluke!

There are plenty of options here at Jack's bait, whether you own your own boat, you want to rent a boat or you want to go on a party boat we have all options available here at Jack's for you!

PS The bluefish contest is coming Aug. 29-30 sign up soon!

Fishing Report

Today is July 13th; the past week and over the weekend we saw a transition in the kinds of fish being caught from large striped bass to smaller schooly sized bass, to an abundance of porgies and a nice assortment of fluke. Snappers and bluefish seem to also be on the list of fish to catch.

On the striped bass front fish to 20 pounds are still being caught on Jack's fresh bunker, Jack's jumbo sandworms and live clams. These fish are being caught in 5 to 10 feet of water along all the shorelines and bridges and Harts Island. Best time to catch these bass are early morning around sunrise.

On the bluefish front the best bite is also early morning and early evening. These fish are being caught in the backs of all the harbors, under the bunker schools. Also you will get an occasional blitz by Stepping Stone Lighthouse off of the south end of City Island.

On the snapper front kids are enjoying catching these snappers off the beaches, the piers and anywhere in the local waters using snapper lures, snapper poppers and spearing.

As far as the fluke go we had weighed in a few 5 and 6 pound fish. One young fisherman, Carmine Pedoto landed a 5 and a half pound fluke on Sunday morning. The fluke fishing is picking up as the water temperature goes above 70 degrees. These fish are being caught in 15-20ft of water and some as deep as 30-40ft of water, they are drifting in Eastchester Bay, Harts Island, Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Prospect Point, Sands Point, Hewlett Point and Matinicock Point. Also drifting by any barges, structures in the water seem to be where the fluke hangout. Best bait to use are spearing, squid, sand eels and filets of Jack's fresh bunker.

The number one fish of the week are porgies. These fish have invaded the Western Long Island Sound and are making for a fun day on the water with porgies to 2 and a half pounds being caught. These fish also like a structure or rocky bottom and are being caught in 15-20ft of water off of all the points, Prospect Point, Sands Point, behind Execution Lighthouse, Pea Island, Huckleberry Island and along all the areas of New Rochelle. Best bait is Jack's famous jumbo sands and blood worms, fresh clams, squid and of course plenty of chum. I say use plenty of chum for the one reason that you need to keep these fish around your boat and with chum it attracts smaller fish which attract bigger fish in short making for a steady catch.

Jack's Bait and Tacke is now stocked with plenty of live and fresh bait, chum pots, chum, hooks, rigs and sinkers. I can not emphasize enough that time is of the essence to get out, enjoy the summer weather, take a your friend, your family, get on a rental boat, get on a party boat or your own pivate boat and get out on the water.

Fishing Report

Breaking Fishing News for surf fishermen...we just received reports of 25-30 pound bass being caught being caught from the shoreline along Orchard Beach, New Rochelle, Eastchester Bay. All on Jack's famous fresh bunker so make sure to hit the shorelines now while these larger fish are in the feeding mood.
With the 4th of July weekend approaching all systems go for porgies, striped bass, bluefish and fluke.

The porgy fishing has picked up tremendously with all of our rental skiffs, party boats and charter boats producing well. Porgies to 17 inches have been caught and weighed in here at the shop. These fish are being caught local near Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and Rye. Also East of Execution Lighthouse by buoy 1 and buoy 2. Depth of water is 15-30ft with some bigger fish being caught in 40-50ft. Best bait Jack's famous jumbo sandworms, bloodworms, fresh clams in and out of the shell, squid, and of course plenty of chum, I can not emphasize enough that in order to keep the fish around your boat you must put out the chum.

On the bluefish front, blues to 15 pounds are being caught inside Hempstead Harbor, Manhassett Bay, Buoy 42, East of Execution Lighthouse in the channel. Anchoring up and using Jack's fresh bunker in 30-50ft of water also using chum is your best bet. You will also catch striped bass mixed in with these bluefish. Over this past weekend we have weighed in fish over 30 pounds so because of all the rain and cooler temps the water temperature is still cool which means these striped bass will hang around at least another month.

On the fluke front, fluke will reopen Friday July 3rd. There have been reports of fluke being caught and released off of Prospect Point, Sands Point, Half Moon Beach, Gageway Rock, Harts Island, Stepping Stone Lighthouse and along the Throgs Neck Bridge near the barges and the beaches. Best bait-spearing, sand eels, squid and filet of Jack's fresh bunker. Good Luck to All and we will see you soon here at Jack's Bait and Tackle.

Fishing Report

Todays date June 15th; this past week proved to be wonderful for porgies, striped bass, bluefish and fluke. Today is the last day for fluke until it reopens on July 3rd through Aug. 17th. By that time the larger fluke will be in the area and there should be plenty of action off all the points by the bridges and along the barges. Best bait is spearing, sand eels and squid. for the larger fish use filets of bunker or chunks of bunker.

Porgies are now open for everyone in the Long Island Sound. Over the weekend large porgies were caught both from the private and rental boats and of course from the party boats. The party boats are traveling further East and producing great numbers and great sizes on the porgy front. All of the party boats are doing well including The Island Current Fleet 1,2 and 3, The North Star, The Daybreak and The Riptide III. They are all sailing daily for porgies at 8am and 8:30am. Also in the evening for striped bass and bluefish at 6:30pm and 7pm. Call 718-885-2042 for more info.

The striped bass and the bluefish are being caught behind Execution Lighthouse, Hempstead Harbor, Manhassett Bay, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Rye and also in the closer waters of Pea Island, Huckleberry Island and Davis Island. The larger fish are feeding under the small pods of bunker, the trick is to get to the bottom with your bait for striped bass before the bluefish eat it. The best bait for these bass and bluefish are fresh bunker using the head or the chunks of the body or if you are lucky enough to snag one live and just let her go. Over this past weekend we weighed in striped bass from 25-40 pounds. Remember the only way to increase your odds of catching these beautiful bass, bluefish and porgies is to make time to get out and fish!

Fishing Report

June is finally here and the best month for the big bass is now! The water temperature, the moon phases, the schools of bait all come into play to make for a very exciting bass fishing day. Large bass have been caught in the mouths of Hempstead Harbor, Manhassett Bay, behind Execution Lighthouse in the middle of the channel in depths of 30-40 feet of water.

Plenty of bluefish have been mixed in with these bass if you find the schools of bunker the bass and the blues will be underneath them having a feast. No time is better than now to get out and catch some of the best bass in all of Long Island Sound.

On the fluke front there are a few fluke being caught by the barges, the bridges and all the points (sands point, matinicock point, prospect point). Best bait bunker filets, spearing, squid and sand eels. These fluke are on the bottom feeding off all the scraps that the bass and blue are leaving behind.

On the porgy front, the biggest sized porgies are being caught now in Bayville, Oyster Bay, Matinicock, Prospect Point, Sands Point and even in the local areas in shallow water between 10-20 feet. Best bait is sand worms, bloodworms, fresh clams and squid. All of the party boats will officially start sailing daily for porgies on June 12th.

Remember with all of these fish chumming is a must if you want to keep the fish around your boat and in the area of where you are fishing for bluefish and bass you use bunker chum and for porgies you use clam chum, again chumming is a must! We have alot to look forward to so make sure to stop in, get your equipment ready and fish every moment you can.

Fishing Report

This past weekend May 1,2,3, 2009 proved to be a spectacular striped bass weekend. Fish to 52 pounds were weighed in here at the shop most of if not all were caught on fresh bunker some also on herring. Mike Urbaez had a 40 pound striper caught on one of Jack's fresh bunker in the East River. Nick Perpepaj caught a 42 pound striped bass also on the head of a fresh bunker this fish was caught north of the George Washington Bridge. Mark Sofranko landed the largest fish of the weekend at 52 pounds this fish was caught on fresh herring also north of the George Washington Bridge. As the waters in the Western Long Island Sound begin to warm these larger fish will funnel into Long Island Sound. The striped bass will be following the bunker wherever they go so make sure to stay tuned as we get the reports live we will give them to you live so you will know exactly where to go to catch that big striped bass!

On the flounder front there are still a few flounders being caught but you must use a lot of chum and work real hard to get these fish. Best areas Hart's Island, Rat Island, The Mussels Beds by the City Island Bridge and in the back bays of Eastchester Bay. Flounder season is open until May 31st. Porgy season will open May 24th. Already there have been reports of porgies being caught and released in The Long Island Sound. Don't let the weather stop you from fishing because the fish bite in all kinds of weather.

Please make sure to email your fishing reports and pictures.

Fishing Report

This past weekend proved to be the start of the striped bass fishing season, rental boats, party boats and private boats all caught fish from 28 to 35 inches. These fish were caught in the local waters by the Throggs Neck Bridge, The Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Eastchester Bay and down along the East River. The best bait is Jack's fresh bunker also sandworms, bloodworms and fresh clams. Depth of water is between 15 to 25 feet fishing on the bottom.

On the flounder front the water is now warming to temperatures in the 50's which is getting these flounder out of the mud. High hook still continues to be 3 or 4 fish with plenty of chum, mussels, sandworms or bloodworms.

As far as the blackfish the season closed April 30th and no one has really targeted them as of yet this year so it looks like we will be waiting for Oct. 1st. The weather is definitely improving so the coming weeks the fishing will be improving also. Make sure to get out and get your fishing in and catch a big bass.

Spring Fishing Update--Flounder and Striped Bass

The opening week of flounder season has started out on somewhat of a decent note, most anglers able to land maybe one or two flounders fishing in the shallow waters of Eastchester Bay, Orchard Beach Lagoon also in the back of Country Club in the Bronx and in the backs of the harbors of Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Greenwich. The best bait is sandworms, bloodworms, muscles and clam chum. Plenty of chum seems to be producing more flounder and stirring up the bottom gets them to awaken from the mud. Along with the flounder there has been a good amount of striped bass being caught with fish up to 28 and 29 inches have been caught in Eastchester Bay, Turtle Cove, along the East River and up and under the George Washington Bridge towards the Hudson River. The New York Striped Bass Season opens up April 15th. The Hudson River Striped Bass Season has been open since March 16th and they are also doing well there with fish between 28 and 38 inches. Best bait are sandworms, bloodworms, fresh clams and artificial lures such as rattle traps, poppers and swim baits. Jack's Bait and Tackle will be stocking fresh bunker starting April 14th. Watch for our bunker special $1 each, 6 for $5, and 12 for $10. Don't hesitate to email or call if you have any questions about what's biting and where.
