Fishing Report and Holiday Sale

As we enter the final month of 2010 we are coming to the end of some seasons and the beginnings of others. Striped bass are still being caught in all the local areas around the shorelines and in the middle of Long Island Sound on bloodworms, clams, and also by jigging them. The striped bass season will officially close December 15th. You will be able to catch and release stripers through the end of the month and into the beginning of next year. The herring has come in strong fishing in Glen Island, Hudson Park, The Pelham Bay Bridge and out in the middle of the sound. Herring rigs are the best thing to use to catch these fish. Jack's will be open all winter for all of your herring and striped bass needs. We will be stocking bait through the winter and running our 10-50% off sale on all tackle in stock.

PS For that hard to find gift there are always Jack's Gift Certificates available!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Fishing Report

We are now in the month of November with the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer. It is now time to take advantage of every nice day to fish for striped bass, blackfish, and some scattered bluefish.

On the striped bass front I have been weighing in fish up to 30 pounds which have been caught off the shore from the Whitestone Bridge and Throggs Neck Bridge areas east. Best bait is Jack's fresh bunker. The striped bass right now are mating and will be for the next couple of weeks until the water temperature drops into the mid to lower 50's. When the temperature does drop the bloodworms, sand worms, and fresh clams will be the best baits for these striped bass.

On the blackfish front the store has been weighing in fish up to 10 pounds which are being caught by Huckleberry Island, Hen and Chicken, Pea Island, Rye Playland and in the middle of the Long Island Sound over any structure or drop off. Depth of water 15-50 feet. As the water temperature drops these fish will move deeper and deeper throughout the month. Best bait fiddler crabs, Asian crabs and green crabs.

On the bluefish front there are still alligator blues being caught in the middle of the Long Island Sound behind Execution Lighthouse. These fish are being caught in 30-50 feet of water with Jack's fresh bunker on the bottom. The bluefish should hang around for another few weeks until the water temperature gets too cold. Remember November is the time when all fish gather up and put their feed bag on and eat like its their last day so make sure to get out and feed these fish.

Jack's Bait and Tackle's 10-50% off everything in stock sale from Election Day through the holidays. Call for store hours. Rental boats will be in the water for another couple of weeks weather permitting. Right now the bait shop hours are Mon-Fri 6am-6pm, Sat and Sun 5am-6pm.

Fishing Report

As we approach the heart of the fall fishing season the water temperatures are beginning to drop and the fish are beginning to feed.

On the blackfish front this has been some of the best black fishing in many years with fish being caught up to 5 and 6 pounds with some larger in the mix. Depths of water are anywhere between 10 and 30 feet. As the water temperature cools even more they will move deeper. Best areas are Red Buoy 2 off of New Rochelle, Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hens and Chicken, David's Island and all along the Conn. shoreline from Larchmont to Mamaroneck East also by the CBS tower and Hart's Island. Best bait Jack's live fiddler crabs, live green crabs and live Asian crabs. Note that the black fishing will continue to be extremely better each day throughout the next 30 days so make sure to get out and take advantage of the warm enough to fish weather before it gets too cold.

On the porgy front The Island Current fleet, docked right here behind Jack's Bait and Tackle is the only local boat with the special RSA permit for porgy fishing and they will continue to fish for porgies until at least the end of Oct. into November until it becomes too cold. They will probably be running some special trips for blackfish so call 917-417-7557 for updates. Best bait for porgies are Jack's Jumbo sandworms and Jumbo bloodworms.

For the bluefish and striped bass enthusiasts there are still plenty of bluefish in the middle of Long Island Sound in 30-50 feet of water. These fish are eating Jack's fresh bunker and anything else they can get their teeth into. There are a few striped bass mixed in but most of the stripers seem to be hanging around in shallow water. The striped bass fishing is best along the shore lines, off the beaches and the bridges also using Jack's fresh bunker, fresh clam and Jack's Jumbo sand and blood worms.

The next couple of weeks are probably going to be the best for fishing so make sure to get out and get fishing.

*** Also remember starting November 1st until Dec. 24th Jack's will be holding its annual sale with 10% to 30% off everything in stock.***

Jack's rental boats will be available until at least mid November for 6am-4pm rental.

Fishing Report

The porgy season has officially closed for private boats, rental boats and off the shore but not for the party boats and charter boats. Both the charter and party boats are able to fish for porgies until Oct.11th with a bag limit of 40 fish per person. The Island Current which sails behind Jack's Bait and Tackle on City Island in The Bronx New York has a special RSA permit which allows him to fish for porgies until they stop biting so for those people who still want porgies come on down and jump on a party boat and fill up your freezers for the winter.

October will bring on some of the best fishing that the Western Long Island Sound has to offer. As the water temperature drops the blackfish, the bluefish and the striped bass will begin to feed. Oct. 1st is the official opening of blackfish season. We are fully stocked with all types of crabs and special hooks and Jack's blackfish jigs also plenty of fresh bunker and live eels. The best blackfish spots early in the season are Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Davis Island, Hens and Chicken, Rye, Mamaroneck, and some deep spots behind Execution Lighthouse.

The stripers and the blues are still biting in the middle of the sound behind Execution Lighthouse. Best bait is Jack's fresh bunker, Jack's jumbo sand worms, Jack's fresh clams and of course for the blackfish Jack's live crabs.

The number of fishing days are limited in the next two months so make sure to get out every day you can. Also make sure to stop in and get your Grunden's warm and weather proof gear for the fall and winter season.

Fishing Report

As we approach the middle of the summer the fishing season is definitely in full force. The water temperature is around 80 degrees which makes for favorable conditions for the bluefish and the porgies. On the bluefish front they are catching bluefish to 18 pounds by Mamaroneck, Rye, Buoy 42 and in the channel behind Execution Lighthouse. These fish are agressively chasing the bunker into the backs of all the harbors. Make sure to have new line and good leaders on your hooks along with Jack's Fresh Bunker to catch these gorilla blues! A reminder The Greatest Bluefish Contest on Earth is just weeks away. Come in and sign up early. This year should be a good contest.

On the porgy front they are catching large porgies by Sand's Point, Prospect Point, Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, The #2 Buoy, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Rye. These fish are hiding from the big bluefish so you need to find an area where there are no bluefish and there will be porgies. Anchoring up in about 20 feet of water using plenty of Jack's fresh clam chum, jumbo sand worms and bloodworms, fresh clams and squid. This fishing will continue to get better as the water temperature increases and then decreases in the month of September.

For the fluke enthusiasts the shop has been weighing fish up to 5 and 6 pounds being caught by Big Tom, the barges, the bridges, Sands Point, Prospect Point, Hewlitt Point and any kind of structure in the middle of the channels. Best bait is Jack's famous spearing, sand eels and gorgeous cut squid. A meal fit for a king and also a large fluke!

On the striped bass front there are a few bass still be caught in shallow water with Jack's fresh bunker and jumbo sand worms and a mix of fresh clam. These fish are in the 10-15 pound range with some larger ones still being caught for some good action. The real large striped bass have moved east with the warmer waters that are now upon us. Again as the water temperatures decrease in the fall the larger fish will be on the feed again in the deep water of Long Island Sound.

We are in the heat of the summer so make sure to take advantage of this fabulous fishing!

Fishing report

The summer and the 2010 fishing season are both red hot! There are plenty of bluefish in the Long Island Sound anywhere from the Throgs Neck Bridge to the Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Hart's Island, Buoy 1 and 2, and anywhere from Execution east. These bluefish have come in and are slamming the large schools of bunker in the area. This morning they were boiling up in Eastchester Bay. A few days ago they were perculating in the mouth of Manhassett Bay. The best bait for these fish of course is fresh bunker and mackeral.

On the striped bass front if you can get past the bluefish the bass are on the bottom feeding off of the leftovers from the bluefish. These fish are in deep water 30-50 feet as the water temperature begins to warm up. Anchoring up and chumming is a must.

On the porgy front all the private boats, rental boats and party boats are coming back with their limits up to 17 inches in size. Best bait for porgies is Jack's jumbo sand worms, jumbo bloodworms and fresh clams. Chumming is also a must! These fish are being caught behind Execution Lighthouse, Prospect Point, Sands Point, Matinicock Point, Bayville, Oyster Bay and in the closer areas by Pea Island, David's Island, Huckleberry Island and the CBS tower.

On the fluke front for those who are interested in drifting the best areas are Prospect Point, Sands Point, Hewlitt Point, the barges, the bridges, Hart's Island, The Blouses, Eastchester Bay and anywhere in the channels. Best bait is Jack's Jumbo spearing, fresh cut squid, sand eels and Peruvian spearing. There are a lot of shorts but don't get discouraged in a few weeks around the full moon the larger fluke should show up so hang in and drift away.

Remember you have to hook them to cook them!

Things could not have timed out any better being that the unofficial start of the summer is upon us and the striped bass and blue fish have invaded the area. These fish are biting on Jack's fresh bunker and are being caught by The Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Throgs Neck Bridge, Maritine College, Ft. Toten, Hempstead Harbor, Manhassett Bay, Hewlett Point, and in the middle of the sound behind Execution Lighthouse. Depths of water as shallow as 20 feet to as deep as 50 feet or somewhere in between. These fish have come out of the river, they are hungry, they have spawned and they are ready to be caught. I can not emphasize enough that from this day forward you need to be out trying to catch some of these beautiful fish whether you keep them or catch and release them just get out and enjoy!

On the fluke and porgy front I have weighed in fluke to 7 and a half pounds. These fish are being caught off all the points from 15-25 feet of water. Best areas Prospect Point, Sands Point, Matinicock Point, Bayville, Hart's Island, and along all the barges and bridges in the area. Best bait Jack's jumbo spearing, fresh sand eels and gorgeous white squid. The porgy season has opened May 24th for all recreational fishermen. I weighed a 3 pound porgy yesterday May 25th.
