Fishing Report

On the final week of the summer 2008 the porgy fishing is at its best with large porgies being caught local by Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hen and Chicken, Buoy 2 off New Rochelle, Prospect Point, Sands Point, and Matinicock Point, anchoring up and chumming is probably the best bet in 15 to 20 feet of water with sandworms, clams and bloodworms. These porgies are hiding from the bluefish which are also being caught in all of these same areas. The bluefish love the fresh bunker and they are catching them in the 6-10 pound range with some up to 12 pounds. As the water gets cooler the larger striped bass will mix in with these bluefish and will be back for their fall run.

Blackfish season opens Oct. 1 and it looks to be a good one with some nice size blackfish already being caught with the porgies. Fiddler crabs, green crabs, fresh clams and Asian crabs will be in stock by the end of September.

Labor Day Fishing Report

As the summer comes to an unofficial end the best fishing is only ahead of us. The fluke fishing officially closes today Sept. 1 but do not dispair the porgies, the blues and the striped bass continue to be on the feed.

The porgy fishing will be open until Oct. 15 with the party boats and charter boats being able to keep 45 fish per person this will give the angler plenty to look forward to as far as filling up the buckets and your freezers for the winter. The shore fishermen and private boat fishermen will still remain at 10 fish per person. Large porgies are being caught at Prospect Point, Sands Point, Matinicock Point and any kind of rocky structural bottom that you can find in the local area. Best bait is sandworms, fresh clams, bloodworms, and plenty of chum.

On the bluefish front there are plenty of bluefish in all the local waters chasing after spearing and bunker with the larger fish being toward the Rye and Mammaroneck areas. Best bait is fresh bunker, mackeral and even trolling seems to produce some nice size fish.

In the striped bass news alot of schooly bass are in shallow water along the area shore lines being caught with sandworms, bloodworms and fresh bunker. Occasionally there still are some larger bass being jigged up in deeper waters around structures.

Snapper fishing in the month of September is at its best! Best bait is spearing, snapper poppers and snapper jigs to catch these baby blues which grow larger every day.

So make sure to get out any chance you can to take advantage of the great weather and great fishing as we head towards the end of the 2008 fishing season!
