These past two weeks have shown that the porgy fishing is at its very best. Locally fish from 1-3 pounds are being caught with catching your limit not a problem. These fish are being caught at Huckleberry Island, the CBS tower, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Rye, behind Execution Lighthouse, Prospect Point and Sands Point. They are being caught in 15-25 feet of water with Jack's jumbo sand worms, fresh clams, clam chum and bloodworms, using plenty of chum to keep the fish around the boat is a must! Shop regulars Freddie Fragano and his two sons Steve and Chris limited out on big porgies in 20-25 feet of water by Huckleberry Island using Jack's jumbo sandworms and clam chum.
On the fluke front there are some keepers being caught off all the points, Hewlett Point, Barkers Point, Matinicock, Prospects, Sands, the barges and the bridges, and any structure in the Long Island Sound. Best bait is spearing, sand eels, squid, large smelts, and filet of Jack's fresh bunker. These fish are also being caught in 15-30 feet of water.
On the bass and bluefish front; the blues seem to show up every morning around Orchard Beach, Harts Island and around the coves. There are still large bass being caught up to 40 pounds. Shop regular Guy Lomardo caught a 40 pounder on fresh bunker which he caught locally in the early morning hours. The best bait for these fish are Jack's fresh bunker, mackeral, and also plenty of bunker chum to keep the fish around your boat.
Jocelyn Joseph had a 25 pound striper on the Island Current over the weekend. Handsome Hank also had a 25 pound striped bass over the weekend which he caught late at night.. Both caught using Jack's fresh bunker!
Again I cannot emphasize enough that the season is moving along quickly so everyone needs to get out and take advantage of every nice day in order to catch some of these porgies, stripers, blues and fluke!

Fishing Report
Today is July 13th; the past week and over the weekend we saw a transition in the kinds of fish being caught from large striped bass to smaller schooly sized bass, to an abundance of porgies and a nice assortment of fluke. Snappers and bluefish seem to also be on the list of fish to catch.
On the striped bass front fish to 20 pounds are still being caught on Jack's fresh bunker, Jack's jumbo sandworms and live clams. These fish are being caught in 5 to 10 feet of water along all the shorelines and bridges and Harts Island. Best time to catch these bass are early morning around sunrise.
On the bluefish front the best bite is also early morning and early evening. These fish are being caught in the backs of all the harbors, under the bunker schools. Also you will get an occasional blitz by Stepping Stone Lighthouse off of the south end of City Island.
On the snapper front kids are enjoying catching these snappers off the beaches, the piers and anywhere in the local waters using snapper lures, snapper poppers and spearing.
As far as the fluke go we had weighed in a few 5 and 6 pound fish. One young fisherman, Carmine Pedoto landed a 5 and a half pound fluke on Sunday morning. The fluke fishing is picking up as the water temperature goes above 70 degrees. These fish are being caught in 15-20ft of water and some as deep as 30-40ft of water, they are drifting in Eastchester Bay, Harts Island, Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Prospect Point, Sands Point, Hewlett Point and Matinicock Point. Also drifting by any barges, structures in the water seem to be where the fluke hangout. Best bait to use are spearing, squid, sand eels and filets of Jack's fresh bunker.
The number one fish of the week are porgies. These fish have invaded the Western Long Island Sound and are making for a fun day on the water with porgies to 2 and a half pounds being caught. These fish also like a structure or rocky bottom and are being caught in 15-20ft of water off of all the points, Prospect Point, Sands Point, behind Execution Lighthouse, Pea Island, Huckleberry Island and along all the areas of New Rochelle. Best bait is Jack's famous jumbo sands and blood worms, fresh clams, squid and of course plenty of chum. I say use plenty of chum for the one reason that you need to keep these fish around your boat and with chum it attracts smaller fish which attract bigger fish in short making for a steady catch.
Jack's Bait and Tacke is now stocked with plenty of live and fresh bait, chum pots, chum, hooks, rigs and sinkers. I can not emphasize enough that time is of the essence to get out, enjoy the summer weather, take a your friend, your family, get on a rental boat, get on a party boat or your own pivate boat and get out on the water.

Fishing Report
Breaking Fishing News for surf fishermen...we just received reports of 25-30 pound bass being caught being caught from the shoreline along Orchard Beach, New Rochelle, Eastchester Bay. All on Jack's famous fresh bunker so make sure to hit the shorelines now while these larger fish are in the feeding mood.
With the 4th of July weekend approaching all systems go for porgies, striped bass, bluefish and fluke.
The porgy fishing has picked up tremendously with all of our rental skiffs, party boats and charter boats producing well. Porgies to 17 inches have been caught and weighed in here at the shop. These fish are being caught local near Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and Rye. Also East of Execution Lighthouse by buoy 1 and buoy 2. Depth of water is 15-30ft with some bigger fish being caught in 40-50ft. Best bait Jack's famous jumbo sandworms, bloodworms, fresh clams in and out of the shell, squid, and of course plenty of chum, I can not emphasize enough that in order to keep the fish around your boat you must put out the chum.
On the bluefish front, blues to 15 pounds are being caught inside Hempstead Harbor, Manhassett Bay, Buoy 42, East of Execution Lighthouse in the channel. Anchoring up and using Jack's fresh bunker in 30-50ft of water also using chum is your best bet. You will also catch striped bass mixed in with these bluefish. Over this past weekend we have weighed in fish over 30 pounds so because of all the rain and cooler temps the water temperature is still cool which means these striped bass will hang around at least another month.
On the fluke front, fluke will reopen Friday July 3rd. There have been reports of fluke being caught and released off of Prospect Point, Sands Point, Half Moon Beach, Gageway Rock, Harts Island, Stepping Stone Lighthouse and along the Throgs Neck Bridge near the barges and the beaches.
