As we get deeper into the fall the water temperature continues to drop there are readings of 55 and 57 degree water temperatures which makes for a good bite especially for the blues, the bass and the blackfish.
On the blackfish front reports of fish to 10 and one half pounds which were weighed in here at Jack's have been caught in water depths from 10-50ft of water. This is a large span of water depth most are concentrating in depths of 10-30ft. Best bait has been fiddler crabs, green crabs, fresh clams and Asian crabs. Best areas are Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hens and Chickens, Rye, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and anywhere east along the Connecticut shorelines as far east as Norwalk. Looking for structure, rocky bottom, or quick drop offs are best.
Bluefish and striped bass have also been caught inside all the harbors, Hempstead, Manhassett, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and further east all on Jack's famous fresh bunker.
As we get closer to the end of October and into November the water temperatures will continue to drop which will cause the bite to get faster and more aggressive on all fronts for bluefish, blackfish and striped bass.

Fishing Report
As we approach the end of September with Oct. 1st only 3 days away all of the fishing efforts will go towards blackfish, bluefish, and fall striped bass. The porgy season is officially closed for all private boaters and anglers but still remains open for the party boat and charter boat fishing until Oct. 15th.
The blackfish season opens Oct. 1st, the store is fully stocked with all crabs and clams, the best spots for these blackfish will be Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Hens and Chicken, and Davis Island. Depth of water between 15-25ft of water is best for these fish but as the water cools off they will move deeper but that will not be until the end of October into November.
On the bluefish front they are catching bluefish between 12 and 15 pounds from the Throgs Neck Bridge to The Stepping Stone Lighthouse to the mouth of Manhassett and Hempstead Harbor. Best bait is Jack's famous fresh bunker and mackeral.
They are still catching snappers which are now on the larger side these fish are biting spearing and they are being caught all around the City Island, New Rochelle and Bronx area around the docks and beaches. Striped bass continue to feed on the live squid in Long Island Sound and to the East on fresh bunker. These fish will continue to move in as the water temperature drops and they will become larger.
As of Oct. 1, 2009 everyone will need a salt water license! You will be able to purchase these licenses at the same locations as you purchase your fresh water and hunting licenses. For further info log on to the Department of Environmental Conservation website www.dec.ny.gov
The next 60 days should be some of the best fishing as long as we get the weather because the fish school up and feed and get ready to head out of town for the winter. So make sure you get out every opportunity you can without hesitation!

Fall Fishing Report
Today Sept. 21, 2009 is the final day of summer and as the summer season ends the water temperature and the fishing is at its best. Saturday Sept. 26th will be the final day for porgy fishing on private boats, rental boats and also from the shore. After Sat. you must get on a party boat or a charter boat to be able to fish for porgies until Oct. 15th with a bag limit of 45 fish per person at least 11 inches. This past weekend porgy fishing was excellent with fish to 3 pounds being caught in 25-35ft of water in all the local areas such as Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye, Execution Lighthouse, Prospect and Sands Point. Best bait Jack's jumbo sandworms and jumbo bloodworms as well as Jack's famous fresh clams in and out of the shell. Also remember to use plenty of chum so you can attract and keep the fish around the boat, chumming is a must!
On the bluefish and striped bass fronts there has been 14-16 pound bluefish being caught by the Throgs Neck, Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Ft. Tonten, and also by Maritine College. These fish are in between 20-40ft of water with Jack's famous fresh bunker being your best bet. They are also eating mackeral and live snapper. The striped bass have been caught on Jack's jumbo sands, Jack's famous fresh bunker(preferably the head) and Jack's fresh clams. There are some live squid in the sound so some of these big stripers are eating the live squid. Early morning or late evening is the best bet for these striped bass which are now starting to come back into the Long Island Sound. I can not emphasize enough that the next 60 days of fishing is best here in the Western Long Island Sound. So please make sure to get out and enjoy every nice from now till then.
