As we approach the unofficial end of the summer the weather and the fishing could not be better! Water temperature is about 75 degrees which makes for a variety of species on the feed.
First off fluke fishing in the local areas of stepping stone lighthouse, big tom, harts island, prospect and sands point, matinicock point even as close as the city island bridge are producing fish to 7 pounds. Jimmy Cedeno and Tony Ortiz landed up to 7 pound fluke which they brought in to the shop this Sat. using a spearing and squid combo on a hi-lo fluke rig these gentlemen are regulars at Jack's and they fish as often as they can.
Remember they call it fishing not catching so in order to increase your odds of catching you need to fish more often.
On the bluefish front one of Big John's motor boat rental regulars Ricardo from miami landed 8 bluefish to 12 pounds between the stepping stone lighthouse and the throgs neck bridge. There are a few ways to catch these bluefish now using fresh bunker of course, remember Big John has the best prices for fresh bunker 6 for $5 and 12 for $10, or trowling with umbrella rigs and surgical tubes. The best areas are hempstead harbor, manhassett bay, stepping stone lighthouse, throgs neck bridge and behind execution lighthouse.
Also keep in mind the WICC BLUEFISH is Aug. 23rd and 24th! You have until Fri. Aug. 22nd by 8pm to sign up for $35 for a chance to win $25,000! You Got To Be In It To Win It!
On the porgy front nice size scup are being caught off of new rochelle, behind execution lighthouse, pea island, huckleberry island, hen and chicken. If you would like to travel a little further east you can try the points off of prospect points, sands point and matinicock point. Sandworms, bloodworms, fresh clams and plenty of chum will get the job done.
There are a few schooly bass for those enthusiasts who enjoy light tackle catch and release most of the larger bass have moved much further east. Along all the shores, beaches and bridges the kids have been enjoying snapper fishing with spearing, lures and snapper poppers.
On a final note the best fishing is yet to come as the seasons change and the water temperature begins to drop ushering in the promise of a fabulous fall fishing season!
See you soon!
