As we approach the unofficial end of the summer 2009 season today Aug. 17th is the final day for fluke fishing. We had a great run this past week with fish to 9 pounds being weighed in at the shop which were all caught on spearing, squid, sand eels and fresh bunker filets but despair not because even though the fluke fishing is closing the bluefish, the striped bass and the porgy fishing has picked up a notch!
This past week all of the local boats, rental boats, private boats and party boats caught great numbers of bluefish, porgies and a few stripers.
The bluefish are being caught from the Throgs Neck Bridge to Stepping Stone Lighthouse, Mannhassett Bay, Hempstead Harbor, Execution Lighthouse and around the backside of Hart's Island. These fish are being caught on fresh bunker off the bottom and around the schools of bunker.
Striped bass will occassionally bite the line if you are out between 5am and 9am early in the morning. Best bait is of course Jack's fresh bunker and these fish are also on the bottom.
On the porgy front there are people catching their limits with fish to 3 pounds all in the local areas around Pea Island, Huckleberry Island, Davis Island, Execution Lighthouse, Sands Point and Prospect Point. These are agressive and usually found in 15-20ft of water. Best bait is Jack's jumbo sandworms, juicy bloodworms, fresh clams and squid.
The porgy season will continue to be open until Sept. 26th for all private ,offshore and rental boats. We still have at least 5 more weeks of good porgy fishing so make sure to get out and take advantage of every nice day. For the party boats starting Sept. 1st their porgy season will increase with a 45 fish bag limit at 11 inches until Oct. 15th so again make sure to get out and enjoy the final few months of this red hot porgy fishing.
For those bluefish enthusiasts The WICC Bluefish Contest with a 1st place prize of $25,000, $10,000 second place, $5,000 third place and many other large money prizes will start Friday night at midnight Aug. 28th. You have until Friday Aug. 28th at 8pm to sign up, $37 is the entry fee and you will get a tee shirt and a chance to win some big money! NOTE I encourage all those bluefishermen to get involved because the bluefishing has been spectacular with large bluefish being caught. It doesn't hurt to take a chance so we will see you soon here at Jack's Bait and Tackle on City Island in The Bronx NY!
PS along with all of the fresh baits needed for these fish CHUMMING IS A MUST, clam chum for the porgies and bunker chum for the bass and blues.
See You Soon!
