Fishing Report

This past weekend May 1,2,3, 2009 proved to be a spectacular striped bass weekend. Fish to 52 pounds were weighed in here at the shop most of if not all were caught on fresh bunker some also on herring. Mike Urbaez had a 40 pound striper caught on one of Jack's fresh bunker in the East River. Nick Perpepaj caught a 42 pound striped bass also on the head of a fresh bunker this fish was caught north of the George Washington Bridge. Mark Sofranko landed the largest fish of the weekend at 52 pounds this fish was caught on fresh herring also north of the George Washington Bridge. As the waters in the Western Long Island Sound begin to warm these larger fish will funnel into Long Island Sound. The striped bass will be following the bunker wherever they go so make sure to stay tuned as we get the reports live we will give them to you live so you will know exactly where to go to catch that big striped bass!

On the flounder front there are still a few flounders being caught but you must use a lot of chum and work real hard to get these fish. Best areas Hart's Island, Rat Island, The Mussels Beds by the City Island Bridge and in the back bays of Eastchester Bay. Flounder season is open until May 31st. Porgy season will open May 24th. Already there have been reports of porgies being caught and released in The Long Island Sound. Don't let the weather stop you from fishing because the fish bite in all kinds of weather.

Please make sure to email your fishing reports and pictures.

See You Soon,
Big John

These are great fish and congratulations to the anglers.

However, I do feel compelled to remark that each of the featured cows was LOADED with hundreds of thousands of eggs.

By snapping some photos and releasing these girls to complete their "business", the fishery, and therefore we fishermen, would be better off in the long run.

I'm just sayin'...
